Any experience with Gesso?

Post by Cambone on Sun Mar 01, 2015 10:52 am

I've been looking for ways of priming other than spray-primer because it's been cold and I'm so bad at it that I usually have to go over most models with a brush and some black pain anyway.

Saw a thread on dakka about using something called Gesso to prime (you like brush it on I guess?) but I can't find that thread anymore. Wondering if anyone knows what that's about.

I can't say that I've used Gesso before, but I have used brush-on primer. It works just fine, but I resent having to paint another layer on a model that I'm about to paint a dozen more layers on, so I have literally primed in my washroom with the fan on while wearing face protection (construction work has given me many toys to play with) and just cleaned up after as if I was cleaning the washroom anyway. If you hold your models low in the tub and do it in short stints the mess can stay there....but I have yet to exercise that much patience.

I just asked my girlfriend, who is super into painting and she uses Gesso to prime canvas all the time. She also says that it should work just fine on plastic models.

haha I've considered priming in the apartment but I don't think it would go over too well.

Thanks though, I might look into picking some up after my current can of spray primer runs out.

No worries man, best of luck. If nothing else it's way cheaper than spray primer it seems.
