This might seem a little dunce, but what powers can or can't be used while the Psyker is 'locked in combat'?

Seems to me only psychic shooting attacks (ie. witchfires and all the variants) are denied. I've read for about as long as thoroughly as I can on the subject, what are some other people's thoughts on the matter?

I always thought that blessings/maledictions were a-ok for CC, while witchfire can't be used only because it is essentially a shooting attack. I remember that came up in our game so I checked for a bit afterwards.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's right, witchfires and focused witchfires are shooting so you can't use them in combat. I think you still might be able to use Nova attacks though?

Isn't Nova just a sub-section of witchfire? I know that they still hit units locked in CC, don't think they can shoot them though. Would be a little cheesy anyways just suicide assaulting a big close combat so you can hit as many clumped up units as possible next turn.

I think the Novas in Combat thing was a 6th ed loophole that they fixed by making Novas a subsection of witch fires in this edition.

Novas are indeed a part of Witchfires, and as such "cannot be locked in combat" if the Psyker wants to cast it. Glad to hear this is the way it works! While I've been party to psychic powers for some time, it's pretty much always been Blessings.

Hey Empisaveg, is that what we came up with in-game? I can't remember at all.

The issue came up when I was using Paroxysm, a malediction, on your Sanguinary squad in CC while the unit manifesting it was in the same combat. I changed my mind half way through and used all my dice for Psychic scream with my Hive Tyrant so it wasn't really an issue.
